Commerzbank profits halved in 2011

<p>Commerzbank, Germany's second-biggest bank, said Thursday that the eurozone debt crisis and losses on its investments in Greece slashed profits in half in 2011.</p><p>The bank also announced new plans to beef up its core capital by more than 1.0 billion euros ($1.3 billion).</p><p>Commerzbank said bottom-line net profit fell by 55.4 percent to 638 million euros in 2011 and operating profit fell even more sharply, plunging 63.4 percent to 507 million euros.</p><div class="og_rss_groups"></div>

Spanish Iberdrola posts profit of 2.8 bn euros

<p>Spanish power group Iberdrola posted Thursday a 2011 net profit of 2.805 billion euros ($3.7 billion), a slip of 2.3 percent owing to a "complicated operating environment."</p><p>Iberdrola's sales gained four percent over the year to 31.6 billion euros however, and core operating profit was 1.6 percent higher at 7.65 billion euros, a statement said.</p><p>Spain, which has the eurozone's fourth biggest economy, is grappling with heavy debt and deficits and the latest data shows that national output shrank by 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011.</p><div class="og_rss_groups"></div>
